While there are many advantages to taking a prescription drugs when it is needed, there can be a risk for abuse if a person is not properly monitored by his or her doctor when taking such medication. Helping a Loved One or Family Member Get Treatment
Should it become apparent that a loved one is abusing prescription drugs, the reaction from family members and close friends is likely to be ripe with concern, fear, worry, and sometimes anger if the person they care about is seemingly addicted to such substances. When these feelings and emotions are present, it is a good idea to channel them into productive and helpful methods for assisting your loved one in getting him or her the rehab that is needed:
- Educate yourself on prescription drug abuse, researching the specific medication that your loved one is abusing. It is important to understand the signs of prescription drug abuse, the effects, and long-term consequences of such a chemical dependency concern.
- Additionally, it is a good idea to educate yourself on the signs of withdrawal and overdose and generate a safety plan should your loved one require medical attention for either of these circumstances.
- Look into prescription drug treatment centers that care for those battling an addiction to prescription medication and share your findings with your loved one.
- Agree to accompany him or her to any assessment or appointment made to begin prescription drug rehab, as this is a great way to show your support.
Lastly, it would be beneficial to be part of your loved one’s care by diligently attending any family sessions that are factored into your loved one’s treatment. This is a great way to, yet again, show your unwavering support.

Continuing Care and Levels of Treatment
At Life Center of Galax, we know that residential rehab for prescription drug abuse is just the first step on the path of lifelong recovery. In order to ensure that all patients are prepared to build upon their progress when they complete treatment at our prescription drug addiction treatment center, we place a strong emphasis on continuing care and relapse prevention.
Discharge planning begins with the meeting that a patient has with his or her primary counselor and is then finalized at least three days prior to his or her discharge.
For patients who have completed residential programming and are ready to return home, yet would benefit from the intensive structure of a day-long therapeutic program, Life Center of Galax offers a partial hospitalization program (PHP). The services and groups that patients engage in during PHP are determined on an as-needed basis and are outlined in each patient’s individualized treatment plan. Patients taking part in PHP have the option of returning home at night or of residing in the onsite housing provided by Life Center.
From the moment a patient walks through our doors for the first time, the goal of Life Center of Galax is to be a source of lasting and positive change and to provide the comprehensive care and compassionate support that will allow struggling individuals, in Virginia, to overcome the obstacles that have prevented them from achieving long-term recovery and living happier and healthier lives.
